Before, At Christ's Return & After Christ's Return

BEFORE CHRIST'S RETURN

Acts 1:9-11
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?  this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

AT CHRIST'S RETURN

1 Corinthians 15:51-53
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O DEATH, WHERE IS THY STING?  O GRAVE, WHERE IS THY VICTORY?

Matthew 24:36-42
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
37 But as the days of No'-e were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that No'-e entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Revelation 1:7
7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.  Even so, A-men'.

Psalm 37:9, 11, 22
9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

John 5:28-29
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

AFTER CHRIST'S RETURN
1 Corinthians 15:23-26, 51 & 52
23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

1 JOHN 3:2

2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

A Black Bible

POINTS TO PONDER:

1.  Not Jesus Himself, nor any of the apostles, the early church fathers, and not one of       the reformers ever spoke or wrote a single word about a rapture.
2.  The teaching of a rapture or a millennial reign was unheard of until the mid-19th           Century.
3.  There isn't a single verse that speaks of Christ leaving the earth when he returns.
4.  The general resurrection will raise every human who has ever lived.
5.  The resurrection of the just and the unjust will occur at the same time.

The Ransom

John's writings in the Bible

JESUS GAVE HIS LIFE A RANSOM

JESUS GAVE HIS LIFE FOR MANY

The Ransom...Jesus gave his life. In Matthew 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Jesus gave his life: they didn't kill him. He gave his life. I am reminded of that during the Easter season when we have an Easter drama here at the church. And as the soldier took the spear to pierce Jesus' side, I thought about the blood and the water that came forth out of his side there that day.

BEING MADE FREE

That blood and that water has washed away the sins out of our life. You see, sin reigns in our mortal body. The only way to get free from that is through Jesus. Whom the Son hath made free, he is free indeed. So, if you want to be free, you have to accept Jesus Christ.

NOT EVERYONE FEELS THE SAME ABOUT JESUS

Now people that have been raised to know the Lord and have been taken to a Christian Church all their life may not think a whole lot about it. But not everybody feels the same way that a Christian does about Jesus Christ. Some people will tell you he was a prophet but they don't believe that he was anything else. Some don't really believe that he was the Son of God on earth.

WE HAVE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE

When Jesus Christ was hanging on the cross I'm reminded of the Centurion as the day got dark there, and Jesus gave up the ghost. He said, "Truly this was the Son of God." Well not just because that Centurion said it but Jesus said, "If I be lifted up from the earth I will draw all men unto me." That is when he was lifted up on that cross. It give us this hope because once he died and he resurrected, we have a hope of eternal life. So it is through his shed blood that we have the remission of sins.

In Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:.

Let me stop right there for just a second to explain what this ransom did.

OUR NATURAL LIFE WILL END

You see our natural life that we live in, it is going to come to an end. The Bible said in Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:.

The natural life is not really what he is speaking about here. The spiritual life is what we get from Jesus Christ with the ransom. The natural life and the death that passed upon all men, for all have sinned: death came by sin. When Adam transgressed the laws of God, we were all sold under sin. Romans 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

This death came upon the world. Our natural life is going to go away. Jesus didn't bring his natural life when he came. The ransom that he paid was for this death. Had he not had a reason to give his life, it would have been death without a cause. He took away the imputed part. We are not accounted for our sins when we come to Jesus Christ.

ABOUNDING GRACE

Romans 4:1 WHAT shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS COUNTED UNTO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, BLESSED ARE THEY WHOSE INIQUITIES ARE FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS ARE COVERED. 8. BLESSED IS THE MAN TO WHOM THE LORD WILL NOT IMPUTE SIN.

The only way that we can do that is through the blood of Jesus Christ. The only way that our sins cannot be imputed where we don't have to give an account for our sins is through the blood of Jesus. Now, do we continue in sin that grace may abound? No, God forbid. We don't continue in sin just because the grace of God is there.

Bearing the Marks of the Lord

A cross with the words "Lest We Forget".

CAN THE WORLD SEE JESUS IN YOU?

Are you bearing the marks of Jesus so the world can see Jesus in you? Our whole motive today is to lift hearts and to cause people to know that Jesus Christ is the Lord. Whether people want to admit it or not, there will be a day that every knee will bow and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

THE GREAT MESSAGE

I want to get that message out to people before it is too late. If God has to bring his destruction in his wrath for you to see that then it is too late. So, we want people to know that Jesus Christ is alive. He came here, died, resurrected, and went back to the Father.

TRAITS

Most people have someone that they resemble or act like. I have traits like my granddaddy, and people tell me that I remind them of him. I was thinking about that, and I want people to see Christ in me.

My granddaddy was a great man of God, and a great man of faith. He believed that God was going to give him a home in heaven someday. That is what I believe.

BEARING THE MARKS OF THE LORD

I want to be like Apostle Paul when he talked about his body bearing the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you have Christ in your life then you ought to be happy about that.

PAUL WAS CONVERTED

In Galatians 6:14 reading down, Apostle Paul was speaking to these people about circumcision and how he had been converted. You know, a lot of people, they don't believe salvation through Jesus Christ. Apostle Paul, he believed in the law of Moses, and he live the straightest sect of religion...a Pharisee. But when he was converted, he was converted to Christianity...he was converted to Christ and not the law of Moses.

THE END OF THE LAW

When Jesus Christ came, he brought about the end of the law for those that believe. Today that is what Paul was talking about here. There was a lot of people that knew Paul from his early days where he had persecuted and wasted the Church of God. He had taken and crucified people even Stephen when he was accused. Saul at that time was there having him accused and standing for that. When he died, he was there standing for that.

SAUL

The Lord converted Saul as most of us may know. He was on his way to Damascus to bind all that called upon the name of the Lord. He had rich authority of the king. You see, just because the world has authority that doesn't mean God can't control. He had rich authority of the king to bind all that called upon the name of the Lord. As he was on his way, God shined a light down from heaven, and he fell to the earth. God chose this man to bring the light to the Gentiles and that is what Apostle Paul had been doing when he was speaking here.

GRACE PLAN

In Galatians 6:14, he is talking about how he had given the light of Jesus Christ in the grace plan that people didn't have to live according to the circumcision anymore. That is what Paul was preaching about here:

"But God forbid that I should glory,"...Now many people in the world, all they look for is their own glory, in their own ways and what they have obtained. And, we measure people by how much they own...for instance, how nice a car they drive or how big their house is or how much money they have in the bank...none of these things matter to God.

BUT SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Matthew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." All of God's possessions can be yours for the taking if you will only ask. God has given unto us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

LAW OF MOSES

Paul was preaching and teaching these people about Jesus Christ and how they didn't have to live according to the law of Moses any more. He said, "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, ". That was the only thing Paul wanted people to see.

There was a point in time in Paul's life when he and Barnabas had healed an impotent man later on in the Bible. The people thought that Paul was some great god, and they wanted to offer sacrifices upon Paul's behalf for what he had done...this man had been healed. Paul wouldn't have it, and he rent his clothes and went back to them and he told him, "I am a man of like passion as you are".

HONOR AND THE GLORY OF GOD BY THE CROSS OF JESUS CHRIST

He didn't want them offering those sacrifices for his glory in his praise. If there is any glory to be done, it is done to the honor and the glory of God by the cross of Jesus Christ. That is what he said there, "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Is Tithing a New Testament Doctrine?

An Act of Worship

Tithing:  Is It A New Testament Doctrine?

ARE CHRISTIANS EXPECTED OR REQUIRED TO TITHE

This is not presented as a definition of the tithe, or as an explanation of the Tithing System. Those have been covered at length by other writers. At some point I may make references to the history of the tithe, only in so far as the reference has relevance to answer the question posed. The question presupposes that there are those who teach, preach, and believe that the New Testament Christian is expected or required to PAY tithes. This paper will answer this and other questions related to tithing.

1.  The first mention in the Bible of the tithe was when Abraham gave a tenth to Melchizedek.

Genesis 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.  And he gave him tithes of all.

  • Note two things; Abraham did not PAY, he GAVE!
  • The Law wasn't given to Moses for another 450 years!

2.  God intended the tithe for the Levitical priesthood.

Numbers 18:21 And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

  • The tribe of Levi had no inheritance.  (No means of sustaining themselves.)

  • Their only concern was the Temple and its priesthood.
3.  As the forerunner of Christ, John was the last prophet God used as the only oracle to speak to His people.

Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

  • As Gentiles were added to the church, they knew nothing of the Law of Moses.  They could not be expected to observe laws they were unaware of.
4. Peter asked the sect of the Pharisees how they could expect Gentile converts to keep laws that neither them nor their fathers had been able to keep.

Acts 15:10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

  • The Pharisees were trying to impose a standard they themselves could not keep.
5.  Paul tells the Romans and us that believers have a new covenant between God and His people.

Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

  • Christ is the end or fulfilling of the law.
6.  Here we see the difference between the new and old covenants.

2 Corinthians 8:1 MOREOVER, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Mac-e-do'-ni-a; 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; 4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

  • The Macedonians first gave themselves to God and the ministry.
7.  Paul begins to outline the principles for New Testament giving.

1 Corinthians 16:1 NOW concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Ga-la'-ti-a, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

  • Consistent, faithful giving.

8. This is the essence of New Testament giving.

2 Corinthians 9:6  But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

  • Cheerfully!!

9.  Luke for the first time in the New Testament describes the generosity and compassion of the new converts.

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. 32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,  35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. 36 And Jo'-ses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,  37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

10.  The Council at Jerusalem endorses and mandates the general precepts for the new believers.

Acts 15:22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to An'-ti-och with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Bar'-sa-bas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren: 23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in An'-ti-och and Syria and Ci-li'-ci-a: 24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: 25  It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,  26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. 28  For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well.  Fare ye well.

  • Notice, no mention of the tithe!!!!
